Green living: Save Our Earth By Living Green

How Solar Energy Can Power Your Home Or Business For Free

If there is one thing that is sure in life, it is that energy prices will continue to rise. With a scarcity of fossil fuels – and no real attempts by the government to clampdown on energy providers – many landlords, homeowners and business directors are looking for cheaper alternatives to powering their properties.

Solar Energy

The good news is that the solution may already be here: solar panels. This is a cheaper, ‘greener’ and simply more sustainable way of powering your home or commercial premises; and over the course of their lifetime your solar panels will actually turn a profit courtesy of the feed-in tariff.

How do solar panels work?

Solar panels harness the sun’s energy, and they do this by capturing its power using photovoltaic cells. These cells then directly convert sunlight into electricity; which can be used to run appliances, equipment and technology.

Don’t they need lots of sunshine to work properly?

No! The photovoltaic cells in a solar panel can generate electricity even on the cloudiest of days.

What are the benefits to me?

There are numerous benefits to installing solar panels on your property, and the good news is that many of them are financial:

  • Solar energy delivers a fantastic ROI (more on that in a moment).
  • Reduced energy bills – a brilliant USP for landlords, and a huge bonus for home owners and business directors.
  • Get paid by the government for the energy you create.
  • Improve the ‘greenness’ of your property – the average set of solar panels save more than a tonne of carbon dioxide emissions every year.

Tell me more about that Return on Investment

First things first, the average domestic solar panel set-up costs between £5000 and £8000, but when you factor in that these can generate a return of around £550 per year, it is easy to see that in a decade or so you will be enjoying free electricity.

This figure of £550 is generated by three payments to you:

  1. The Feed-In Tariff Generation Payment – this differs from city to city and town to town, but your payment is likely to be in the region of £400 to £475 per calendar year.
  2. The Feed-In Tariff Export Payment – again this differs for geographic areas, with a span of £75 to £95 per year.
  3. Energy Bill Savings – these level out to around £65 per year for the average household.
