Green living: Save Our Earth By Living Green

Saving electricity: not just for your monthly bill

You know that saving electricity is important. With the prices of power rising every day, reducing your electricity consumption means more money in your pocket. But did you also know that saving electricity can help reduce your carbon footprint? Before calling your electrician to change all your electricity system (although, if you do have the means, please do; there are a lot of new products to help control electricity loss throughout your home), you can use the following tips to help reduce your general energy consumption and so help the planet survive human abuse a little longer.

Bulb Light

You can help reduce your carbon footprint in many areas of your life. The first thing you need to think about is transportation. Fossil fuel is dirty and pollutes air, water and ground. For the lowest footprint, walk or bike; take public transportation whenever possible or during the winter months. If you have no access to public transit and absolutely need a car, make sure you use it no more than necessary, keep it properly maintained and drive under the speed limit. You can also more simply buy a hybrid car (and soon enough, all-electric cars).

There are a lot of things you can do in your home as well. Change your lightbulbs to low-mercury compact fluorescent models. They use three times less electricity than traditional bulbs. Install energy-efficient window coverings and check your home for draughts where precious heat in lost in the winter. Wear warm clothes in your home in the winter so you don’t need to heat up so much, turn off the lights when you leave a room or the house and unplug your electronics when not in use. You can even ask your power company if they provide a “green electricity” option; for a minimal monthly fee, you will know that your electricity comes from a green source.

Industries and plants also use a lot of electricity in making all the objects we need every day, so make sure to buy only the things you really need. Try and buy used products whenever possible; a lot of websites list things people want to sell or give away. You might find exactly what you need for a fraction of the price of the new product! At the grocery store, privilege organic products since their production has much less impact on the planet than regular food production methods. Eat less meat, and get your produce locally when in season at the farmer’s market. Even better, grow your own vegetables and herbs in your garden. Go treasure-hunting for clothing in thrift stores, and buy used books instead of new ones. Clean your home by using non-toxic, natural products. Compost as much waste as you can, and recycle the rest.

If you follow these easy, energy-saving tips, not only will you save on your electrical services bill, but you will also help make the planet a greener, more sustainable place. You don’t need to implement everything at once; small, gradual steps are better than no steps at all. The planet sustains and nourishes us, and it’s our responsibility to make sure that we don’t destroy it in the process.
