Solar Power Used In Movies

Solar power is power obtained from the extraction of energy from sunlight.

Photovoltaic - Solar Power

Power is obtained from the sun by using photovoltaic (PV), which uses semiconducting materials to convert solar energy, the light and heat from the sun, into direct currents of electricity. PVs use solar panels made up of several solar cells (or also, photovoltaic cells) which absorb the sun’s rays.

Since solar power is renewable energy, it’s clean, and natural, and it replenishes itself, and is better than energy that comes from oil or coal, so it’s no wonder that solar, together with wind and hydro energy, is being advocated. One of the ways it’s being advocated is movies. So what are the movies or any type of media that promote this clean kind of energy?

The Big Short (2015), Paramount Pictures

The Big Short movie released in 2015 was about the 2008 economic crisis that affected the housing industry in the United States. After Jared Vennett, a salesman at Deutsche Bank played by Ryan Gosling shares some background on the story, there is an aerial shot of a neighborhood with solar panels on their rooftops. In addition to that, Brad Pitt, who plays the supporting role of Ben Rickert who used to work at JPMorgan Chase Bank, supports solar powered affordable housing.

Teenage Mutant Nina Turtles (2014), Paramount Pictures

In 2014, our beloved Ninja Turtles, Leonardo, Raphael, Donatello, and Michelangelo, landed on the silver screen. And what did they have to ride around in cruising the streets of New York? Why, a kick-ass solar powered van, of course!

Sahara (2005), Paramount Pictures

In this American-Spanish action-comedy from 2005, the central characters played by Matthew McConaughey, Steve Zahn, Penélope Cruz, who were running for their lives as they try to solve the mysteries in the movie, stumble upon a huge solar plant in the middle of the Sahara Desert.

Race the Sun (1996), TriStar Pictures

This comedy-drama is about a school teacher in a high school in Hawaii, Sandra Beecher played by Halle Berry, implores her students to come up with an idea for a science project. The students came up with a solar powered car. The car, which they named “Cockroach” which they entered in the 1990 World Solar Challenge, and finished in 18th place.

The Walking Dead (2010 – present), AMC

The horror-drama series, which is based on a comic book series with the same name, but has taken route from the books. In season 3, solar panels appear on buildings in Georgia; in season 5, in the somewhat utopian neighborhood of Alexandria, residents have solar panels on their lawns which power their homes.

Solar energy powers so many things. It gives life to plants and animals, it makes the earth warm enough for life to thrive, and it provides us with light and power for our electronic needs. But what about with science fiction?

Superman (1978, 1980, 1983, 1987); Superman Returns (2006); Man of Steel (2013); DC Animated Universe; DC Animation, DC Entertainment, & Warner Bros. Pictures

Superman gets his powers from Earth’s yellow star, Sol. The cells of his Kryptonian body absorb and metabolize yellow solar energy, making him a literal giant solar battery as his cells also store the energy, making it possible for him to use his powers in the absence of solar energy, such as at night or in space. His body converts solar energy into fuel for his powers, which he doesn’t have under the Rao, the red star Krypton orbited. When Superman is weakened or injured, he breaches the atmosphere and recharges closer to the sun, as he heals faster when he absorbs unfiltered solar radiation.
