Green living: Save Our Earth By Living Green

Three Ways You Can Help Your Community Get Green

“Sustainable living” is the keyword of this century. More people these days are reducing their ecological footprint with their transportation, their diet, and their purchases. We are beginning to really understand the impact we have on each other as a community. It’s not just enough to green our own lifestyle anymore. As we take the idea of sustainable living beyond just our own four walls, we can reconnect to our neighborhood as well as to our planet. Involving our communities and our town in the process, we can build a stronger community focused on making the world better. Here are three easy ways you can help green up your community.

1. Buy Local
Shopping locally helps to reduce food miles – the distance food travels to get to us – as well as improving the community by keeping its resources circling. You can use websites like Local Harvest to find local suppliers or visit a farmers’ market nearby to find good local produce. You can even start a community garden to help encourage those around you to get involved. You may be surprised at how many people want to support local farmers but just never know quite how to go about it.

2. Recycle
This is one of the easiest ways to get involved in greening your community, because many cities already have recycling programs in place. Whether you’re at home or at work, recycle everything you can and encourage those around you to do the same. You can even make it easier for them and show how much you care. Offer to take your co-workers’ empty soda bottles to the recycling bucket as you’re on your way, or help clean up after a neighborhood barbecue and make sure everything goes where it should.

3. Encourage a Solar Panel Project
This one is the most difficult of these three, but it by far has one of the most impressive pay-offs. Many communities are investing in Community-Owned Solar Co-ops, which allow city residents to buy their electricity directly from their own solar energy project, rather than pouring their money into the utility companies. Granting a community ownership in a project like this brings people together and provides energy everyone can use. There have been so many great innovations to renewable energy such as slew drive. Try to get the word out about innovation technology such as slew drives, ect. You won’t be able to do this on your own, but start suggesting it to city leaders and see if they are interested in making this a reality.

Community leaders are seeing the need to make our future sustainable. Each community can work together to improve the way they function and, in the end, form a neighborhood, village or town that makes the world a better place.
